The SmartROC (RAID-on-chip) 3200 and SmartIOC (I/O controller) 2200 from Microchip support x8 and x16 PCIe Gen 4 host interfaces and up to 32 lanes of NVMe/SAS/SATA connectivity. According to the manufacturer, these two storage controllers offer three times higher performance than competing solutions, along with security and manageability features for demanding server applications.
Tri-mode operation allows the controllers to automatically perform PCIe, SAS, and SATA detection and link-speed negotiation. Support for up to 8 GB of onboard cache triples RAID performance. Dynamic channel multiplexing provides bandwidth aggregation for lower-speed drives over a SAS-4 link, achieving link efficiency of greater than 99%.
The PCIe Gen 4 SAS-4 tri-mode controllers provide built-in hardware root-of-trust to safeguard information and protect against supply-chain attacks. They also furnish controller-based data-at-rest encryption for NVMe, SAS, and SATA media. Unified storage management tools include integrated baseboard management controller (BMC) functions and other standards-based capabilities.
Part of the Smart Storage platform, the controllers work with Microchip’s common set of deployment tools. These include maxView storage manager, ARCCONF management tools, DMTF’s PLDM/RDE, and ChipLink diagnostic software.
SmartROC 3200 and SmartIOC 2200 PCIe Gen 4 SAS-4 controllers are available now in production quantities.
