Portable NVDA is a versatile application that targets vision impaired people, helping them to use the computer via a very efficient screen reader that hints them on the current action.

This type of communication is facilitated by a synthetic voice based on a text-to-speech engine that automatically reads the text under the mouse cursor. By achieving this, the program can help initiate the blind in computer usage.

The program is completely portable, which translates into the fact that it does not need installation and can be carried on a removable drive and launched on any machine without affecting the registry.

With support for more than 40 languages, Portable NVDA becomes available to both English and non-English speakers and is an open source project, which recommends it for use inside large organizations as well.

Once it is launched, the application will start to enunciate every action you take by reading the text under the cursor. If you switch between open windows, it will properly communicate this to you, while the programs pinned to the taskbar are automatically identified as you hover over them.

There’s no interface to the program, as its whole array of features is gathered inside a system tray control panel from which various configurations become available.

Settings related to the synthesizer, voice, braille, mouse, keyboard and speech dictionaries can be customized using the Preferences menu. Moreover, the application can keep a detailed log file on performed actions or display all of the speech events, as they occur.

Overall, Portable NVDA makes quite an impression. We were dazzled by the accuracy of its engine and we recommend it to any user that has trouble operating a computer due to impaired eyesight.
