During the recent Halo Infinite beta test, fans managed to find a way to access a work-in-progress version of Halo Infinite’s Forge mode, which is the latest iteration of the franchise’s fan-favorite map building and editing tool. Recently, the contents of the Forge build leaked on social media, leading to the discovery that Halo Infinite’s Forge mode will have powerful scripting features that completely surpass anything that was possible in previous games such as Halo: Reach and Halo 5: Guardians.
In these titles, the scripting elements of Forge were fairly limited and would only allow you to do simple things, like spawn or despawn objects at a specific time. Based on this Halo Infinite leak, however, it looks like players will have access to node editing tools that are similar to Unreal Engine’s blueprints.
These tools will allow players to script special events that affect players, weapons, vehicles, map objects, and skilled Forgers will also be able to make use of things like timers, win condition editors, and trigger condition options to create new types of custom gameplay experiences that are more advanced than ever before. In short, Halo Infinite’s Forge looks less like a simple map editor and more like a mini game creation tool.
It’s exciting to think about the potential of Halo Infinite’s Forge mode, although the fact that Halo Infinite is launching without it is a huge disappointment. Still, as someone who has frequently used Forge ever since the first iteration of it launched in Halo 3, I’m hyped to test Forge out when it arrives in 2022. I’ve always wanted to create custom Firefight maps with scripted AI enemies, and based on the contents of this leak, my dream appears to be closer to reality than ever before.
Halo Infinite is slated to launch on Dec. 8, 2021 on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One consoles, and Windows PCs. The multiplayer will be free-to-play, but the campaign costs $60.
