In a landmark development, Nokia has been chosen by Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL) as a key partner for the deployment of 4G and 5G networks across India. This three-year deal includes both the modernization of VIL’s existing 4G infrastructure and the rollout of cutting-edge 5G technology, marking a significant step in India’s telecommunications evolution.
Expanding 5G Across Major Indian Cities
As part of the agreement, Nokia will deploy its energy-efficient AirScale portfolio to bring advanced 5G connectivity to major Indian cities. This deployment will support over 200 million Vodafone Idea subscribers, making it one of the largest rollouts in the region. Nokia will also replace the incumbent vendor in key regions like Chennai and Andhra Pradesh, further expanding its market share. Notably, these regions contribute over 50% of VIL’s revenue, underscoring the importance of this deal.
Cutting-Edge Technology for Superior Connectivity
Nokia will supply an array of advanced 5G equipment, including its ReefShark System-on-Chip-powered base stations, baseband units, and Habrok Massive MIMO radios. Designed for easy deployment, these technologies will ensure high-capacity, high-coverage 5G services, while simultaneously modernizing the 4G network with multiband radios that are 5G-ready.
Vodafone Idea will also benefit from Nokia’s MantaRay SON (Self-Organizing Network) solution, which enhances network performance through automation and optimization. This system allows for self-configuring modules that adjust in real time, providing superior efficiency and reliability for Vodafone Idea’s growing network.
Transforming Connectivity in India
The deployment is set to commence immediately, with Nokia handling not only the equipment supply but also the planning, integration, and optimization services. This marks a new phase in Vodafone Idea’s digital transformation strategy, as the company seeks to offer best-in-class connectivity to its subscribers.
Vodafone Idea’s CEO, Akshaya Moondra, expressed excitement about the partnership, saying: “We are committed to providing a world-class 4G and 5G experience to our customers. This deal with Nokia, a trusted partner for over three decades, will enable us to deliver high-speed connectivity and increased capacity, empowering innovation across sectors.”
A Long-Term Partnership
Nokia’s involvement in Vodafone Idea’s network goes back decades, having previously supported the company’s 2G, 3G, and 4G networks. Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia, emphasized the continuation of this collaboration: “This new deal highlights VIL’s confidence in Nokia’s technology. We look forward to powering their network with our latest innovations and helping bring premium connectivity to millions of customers across India.”
What’s Next?
As Nokia begins the deployment of 5G networks across India, the partnership is poised to transform India’s telecommunications landscape. With the potential to unlock new levels of innovation and efficiency, particularly in sectors like healthcare, education, and manufacturing, this deal marks a pivotal moment in the nation’s digital journey.
