Viasat Secures $33.6 Million U.S. Air Force Contract for Advanced Phased Array Antenna Development

Viasat, Inc., a leader in satellite communications, has been awarded a $33.6 million contract from the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) under the Defense Experimentation Using Commercial Space Internet (DEUCSI) program. The contract will see Viasat develop Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) systems to enhance satellite communication resiliency for tactical aircraft, including helicopters and other rotary wing platforms.

The DEUCSI program focuses on leveraging commercial satellite services to provide resilient communications for military operations by enabling access to multiple frequency bands, orbits, and vendors. Viasat will apply its expertise in AESA technology and radio frequency integrated circuits (RFIC) to create a phased array antenna with increased flexibility and reliability, capable of adapting to dynamic mission requirements.

This high-performance, low-size, weight, and power (SWAP) AESA antenna will allow tactical aircraft to connect across different networks seamlessly, supporting enhanced communications during critical missions. Its design includes advanced features such as multiple beam capabilities, low probability of intercept (LPI), and resistance to jamming, making it ideal for military operations requiring high levels of security and operational efficiency.

Michael Maughan, Vice President of Space and Mission Systems at Viasat, emphasized the importance of hybrid communications solutions for future government mobility operations. “Our team’s experience with AESA technology allows us to solve complex interoperability challenges, ensuring resilient communications across multiple bands and orbits,” said Maughan.

This contract follows previous awards in 2023 for phased array antenna technology development, highlighting Viasat’s contributions across various applications, including land, maritime, space, and airborne platforms.
