German University Embraces 5G Technology to Transform Research and Learning

A game-changing 5G network has been deployed at Rosenheim Technical University of Applied Sciences (TH Rosenheim) in Germany, ushering in a new era of advanced research, immersive learning, and real-time AI applications. The initiative is a result of a strategic collaboration between Slovenia’s Kontron and network solutions provider Mugler SE. The 5G Mobile Private Network (MPN), integrated by Mugler SE, is set to deliver high-speed connectivity, ultra-low latency, and increased capacity for over 7,500 students and researchers at TH Rosenheim’s state-of-the-art proto_lab.

“At Kontron, we are proud to be part of a project that not only advances cutting-edge research but also creates invaluable learning opportunities for the next generation of innovators,” said Janez Öri, Executive Director of Communications Solutions at Kontron.

With the deployment of this private 5G network, students and researchers at proto_lab—under the leadership of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Noah Klarmann—will gain hands-on experience with AI, automation, and cloud-based real-time applications. This aligns with the institution’s goal of preparing students for an increasingly digitalized world.

“A reliable network enhances mobility and flexibility in dynamic environments like production and logistics,” noted Prof. Dr.-Ing. Oliver Kramer, Co-Founder and Director of proto_lab. “Our 5G campus network provides the perfect foundation for R&D advancements.”

Boosting Industry & Academic Collaboration

Beyond academia, the network paves the way for enhanced automation, asset tracking, and real-time process optimization across various industries.

Key use cases include:

  1. Autonomous Vehicles & Robotics
  2. Flexible Workspaces & Smart Factories
  3. AI-Driven Process Automation
  4. Enhanced Security & Remote Communications

“This marks the beginning of a four-year partnership where industry-relevant applications will be tested,” added Dr. Markus Dod, Director of Local Networks at Mugler SE. “Our goal is to show how tailored 5G networks can revolutionize both academia and industry.”
