Lockheed Martin, Nokia, and Verizon have successfully integrated Nokia’s military-grade 5G solutions into Lockheed Martin’s 5G.MIL® Hybrid Base Station (HBS), marking a significant leap forward in military communications. This collaboration enhances interoperability between commercial 5G networks and military tactical systems, providing faster, more secure, and more reliable data transmission for national defense.

Modern military operations depend on real-time information and seamless connectivity. By combining commercial 5G networks with existing defense infrastructure, this integration ensures warfighters and defense operators can securely and efficiently transmit mission-critical data across the battlespace. The 5G.MIL® solution enhances situational awareness, speeds up decision-making, and strengthens the security of military communications.

Industry Leaders Weigh In on the Collaboration

John Clark, Senior Vice President of Lockheed Martin Technology & Strategic Innovation, emphasized the strategic importance of this advancement, stating that the U.S. and its allies require fast, secure, and advanced communications to maintain an operational advantage. He noted that this partnership with Nokia and Verizon ensures data flows seamlessly across the battlespace, enhancing mission effectiveness and deterrence against evolving threats.

Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia, highlighted how Nokia’s advanced 5G solutions are built to meet the unique demands of military operations. He explained that working with Lockheed Martin and Verizon enables the delivery of secure, high-performance connectivity, ultimately improving situational awareness and mission execution.

Successful Testing and Demonstrations

Lockheed Martin recently conducted a series of successful demonstrations showcasing how Nokia’s 5G technology integrates into the 5G.MIL Unified Network Solutions ecosystem. These tests validated the interoperability of military tactical communications with 5G networks using open systems architecture, allowing for rapid deployment of advanced technologies without vendor lock-in.

The demonstrations were carried out at Verizon’s Boston Innovation Center, Lockheed Martin’s Valley Forge laboratory in Pennsylvania, and concluded with final testing at Lockheed Martin’s Fort Worth, Texas facility. One of the key breakthroughs was the ability for hybrid user equipment (HUE) to switch between commercial 5G and tactical low-probability-of-detection (LPx) waveforms without disrupting operations. This capability enhances mission security by protecting against threats such as jamming, interception, and spoofing.

Expanding the Future of 5G in Defense

Lockheed Martin, Nokia, and Verizon plan to build on this success by expanding hybrid network testing to include additional military communication systems and broadening the scope of 5G applications for defense and national security. Nokia’s 5G technology will soon be integrated into Lockheed Martin’s 5G.MIL Experimental Network in Orlando, Florida, joining Verizon’s existing capabilities on-site.

With its low latency, high bandwidth, and secure connectivity, 5G technology is set to revolutionize military communications by enabling real-time data sharing, strengthening interoperability, and providing enhanced connectivity in complex operational environments.
