Astrum Mobile Partners with SWISSto12 to Launch Asia Pacific’s First Satellite-to-Device 5G Service

Astrum Mobile, the only dedicated Satellite-to-Device (S2D) company in Asia Pacific, has selected SWISSto12 to manufacture NEASTAR-1, a geostationary satellite that will power the region’s first 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) service. This breakthrough technology will enable direct satellite connectivity to standard smartphones and smart devices, providing seamless coverage without reliance on traditional cell towers.

NEASTAR-1 will operate from geosynchronous orbit at 105E, covering the entire Asia Pacific region. Built on SWISSto12’s HummingSat platform, the satellite is designed to deliver high-power L-band connectivity, making it resilient against extreme weather disruptions such as typhoons, floods, and earthquakes. Unlike conventional satellite services that require specialized equipment, Astrum Mobile’s S2D network will work on regular smartphones, allowing users to access media, emergency alerts, IoT services, and real-time data even in the most remote locations.

Bridging the Digital Divide with 3GPP 5G NTN Technology

The launch of NEASTAR-1 aligns with the global shift towards direct-to-device satellite communications, a sector that has gained momentum with the adoption of 3GPP 5G NTN standards.
