3G Shielding Specialties Enhances RF Protection with Wavexorb Microwave Absorbers

3G Shielding Specialties is a provider of synergistic shielding solutions that integrate metalwork, conductive elements, microwave absorbers, and thermal transfer products. Among its products is the Wavexorb line of advanced-performance microwave absorbers that are engineered to suppress unwanted electromagnetic radiation that can interfere with electronic system functionality or lead to regulatory non-compliance.

These absorbers are available in various material types and formulations, each version tailored to deliver specific absorption characteristics. Wavexorb absorbers are formulated by combining a matrix of silicone, nitrile, urethane, or foam with magnetic and carbon-based fillers. They are supplied in sheet form, with or without pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA).

3G’s microwave absorbers offer a practical solution to EMI/RFI challenges, often eliminating the need for additional shielding. They are well-suited for advanced technologies such as automotive radar systems and commercial wireless applications. Designed to operate at higher frequencies than traditional shielding materials, these absorbers can also be used in conjunction with other EMI/RFI shielding solutions to expand frequency coverage. These absorbers can be mounted directly using PSA and are often applied directly to high-frequency board-level components. 3G offers a wide range of microwave absorber types to address varied application needs.

Types of Microwave Absorbers Offered by 3G Shielding Specialties:

Narrowband Absorbers: Also known as tuned or resonant frequency absorbers, these single-layer materials are optimized to absorb energy within a specific frequency band (typically ±10% of the target frequency). They perform effectively from 1 GHz to 65 GHz. They are customizable in both formulation and thickness and are ideal for applications where broadband absorption is not required. Their slim profile makes them suitable for space-constrained designs.

Cavity Resonance Absorbers: Designed for use inside microwave cavities, these absorbers attenuate resonant modes, harmonics, and oscillations. They provide excellent attenuation across 1 GHz to 20 GHz, even at high angles of incidence. Typically made from silicone, they are installed against metallic surfaces and are available in sheet form or as application-specific solutions.

Surface Wave Absorbers: Intended for traveling wave attenuation along conductive surfaces, these magnetically loaded elastomeric materials exhibit high loss characteristics. They perform effectively from 1 GHz to 20 GHz. The standard composition uses a silicone matrix, but other elastomeric binders are available to meet specific environmental or mechanical requirements.

Low Frequency Absorbers: These are the thinnest and lightest in the Wavexorb lineup. They are formulated with specialized magnetic fillers that provide high permeability for effective absorption in the 500 MHz to 3 GHz range. Designed for application directly onto metal surfaces or noisy circuits, these absorbers are available in sheets and can be customized into specific shapes.

Dielectric Foam Absorbers: Lightweight and carbon-loaded, these materials provide high levels of attenuation across a wide range of incidence angles. Dielectric foam absorbers are ideal for free-space applications such as radomes or antenna enclosures. They offer broadband absorption from 1 GHz to 40 GHz and are a cost-effective solution for many designs.

In addition to standard product offerings, 3G customizes Wavexorb absorbers into various shapes, sizes, and configurations to meet unique application demands. The engineering team is committed to innovation and customer collaboration. By addressing challenges throughout the design and integration phases, 3G ensures a high-quality and responsive customer experience.
