The New Scientist Book Club has been reading Grace Chan’s debut novel Every Version of You, in which her characters face an impossible choice that forces us to reckon with the insidious ways technology consumes us. Should they upload their minds to a virtual utopia, Gaia, or crumble away in the abandoned physical world? We sat down with Grace to ask all about the inspiration behind her nuanced characters, how she crafted a plausible mind-uploading technology, and whether she would upload her own mind into Gaia.
