The next chapter of Marvel Rivals is on the way, with the team at NetEase Games unveiling what’s coming in Season 5 on Tuesday.
As was previously all-but-confirmed, the two characters joining the battle for Marvel Rivals Season 5 are Gambit and Rogue, with the iconic pair of X-Men attempting to get married. The interruption of their wedding on Krakoa kicks off the story for this season, which is set to begin on Nov. 14, 2025.
That trailer also revealed Cyclops, a.k.a. Scott Summers, team leader for the X-Men. While I seriously doubt that Cyclops will also be added this season, this could be a fun teaser for one of the characters we can expect to see in Season 6.
Gambit is the first character in the pair to arrive, and he’ll be ready to deal at the season’s start. In a refreshing surprise, Gambit is a strategist, the first to be added to the game since Ultron back during Season 2. With three new Duelists and only a single Vanguard added since then, saying he’s sorely needed is an extreme understatement.
A video showcasing Gambit’s abilities reveals his healing prowess, while his Ultimate is capable of greatly boosting allies, letting them jump higher and deal more damage at the same time.
The Marvel Rivals development team also shared a dedicated video with a round-up of the various changes coming alongside the new season. Creative director Guangguang confirmed that, as previously promised, cross-progression is finally coming to Marvel Rivals at the start of Season 5.
This feature allows players to take their skins and other cosmetics they’ve unlocked or purchased across platforms without issue.
Other noteworthy tidbits for this season include new team-up abilities, with Black Widow getting a team-up with Phoenix that allows the former to switch her rifle to healing bullets, giving her additional role flexibility.
Finally, Marvel Rivals is also getting competitive placement matches, which should hopefully address the issues of ranked resets causing serious congestion across the various ranked tiers. This was a big problem, to the point I (and others I know) flat-out quit ranked play, so I’m crossing my fingers things improve with this addition.
As for Rogue, we’ll have to wait and see. She’ll be coming at the halfway point for Season 5.5, but her role hasn’t been confirmed. I can see an argument for placing her in any of the three categories, but I’m personally hoping for another Vanguard.
This could be the best season in months
Having Gambit and Rogue arrive in the same season is great, and I’m especially happy that the former can provide some support variety. I don’t mind playing Strategists, in fact, I enjoy it, but the lack of options had been building to a breaking point.
I’m also extremely happy that cross-progression is arriving this season. I enjoy playing on my Xbox, but sometimes I’d like the option to play on my PC as well while still having all my stuff.
We don’t have the full patch notes for Marvel Rivals Season 5 at this time, but everything the developers have shared and shown so far seems extremely promising. As long as there’s no unexpected nonsensical nerfs, this could easily be the best season the game has had in months.
