After breaking down my personality with ChatGPT and prompting it to recommend distinctive hobbies based on it, I suddenly got the urge to stay in the realm of using AI to dissect other people’s personalities.
I’ve always been fascinated by personality types. Whether I’m talking with close friends, family members or coworkers, I naturally pay attention to how people communicate, carry themselves and react in different situations. It’s interesting to notice who seems more introverted (like me) versus who draws energy from being around others.
At this point, I use OpenAI’s ChatGPT for just about everything, so I recently had an idea: why not ask it for practical prompts designed to analyze someone’s personality?

Personality prompting
With this list of prompts generated by ChatGPT, I always have a fun way to get a better understanding of someone’s quirks, behavior in social situations, character traits that aren’t obvious at first glance and more:
- The ‘Behavior Breakdown’ prompt: Analyze this person’s personality based on their behaviors and habits: [insert details]. Break it down into core traits, motivations, and possible insecurities.
- The ‘Big Five Analysis’ prompt: Based on the following description, estimate this person’s Big Five personality traits (Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Neuroticism) and explain your reasoning: [insert description].
- The ‘Strengths & Weaknesses’ prompt: From this description of a person, identify their biggest personality strengths and their blind spots or weaknesses. Be honest and specific: [insert details].
- The ‘How They Think’ prompt: Analyze how this person likely thinks and makes decisions based on this information: [insert behaviors, choices, or patterns].
- The ‘Social Dynamics’ prompt: Based on this description, how does this person likely behave in social situations, friendships, and conflict? [insert details].
- The ‘Emotional Profile’ prompt: What are 3 personality traits this person might have that aren’t obvious at first glance? Use this description: [insert details].
- The ‘Hidden Traits’ prompt: What are 3 personality traits this person might have that aren’t obvious at first glance? Use this description: [insert details].
- The ‘Archetype Match’ prompt: Based on this description, what personality archetype best fits this person (e.g., leader, strategist, caregiver, rebel)? Explain why: [insert details].
- The ‘Red Flags & Green Flags’ prompt: Analyze this person’s personality and list potential red flags and green flags in relationships or work environments: [insert details].
- The ‘Predict Their Behavior’ prompt: Given this personality description, predict how this person would react in these situations: [list scenarios]. Explain the reasoning behind each prediction.
Figuring out a close friend’s personality type
One of my closest friends, whom I’ve known since my college days (2006 to 2010), is a fun-loving guy who is always joking around with his friends. At the same time, he enjoys spending time alone editing the original videos he shoots, which fits his creative side.
He’s also incredibly apologetic, quick to say sorry for even the smallest mistake, and always wants to complete any task as perfectly as possible. Around strangers, he can come across as shy and reserved, but once he feels comfortable, his sharp sense of humor quickly takes over.
With those details in mind, I entered them into OpenAI’s ChatGPT using the first prompt to get a read on his core traits, motivations and possible insecurities.
The chatbot broke his personality down into the following categories:
- Core personality praits: Socially Adaptive (Introvert–Extrovert Blend), Creative + Internally Driven, Conscientious / Perfection-Oriented and a Warm but Guarded Personality.
- Core motivations: Desire for Acceptance and Belonging, A Need for Competence and Validation Through Work and Comfort in Control (Through Solo Activities).
- Possible insecurities: Fear of Letting Others Down, Social Self-Consciousness, 3. Perfectionism as a Double-Edged Sword and a Hesitation to Fully Express Himself Early On.
ChatGPT went on to give me an overall personality snapshot of my friend by noting that he’s a creative, conscientious and socially selective person who thrives in environments where he feels safe, understood, his creative work shines and his humor is welcomed.
But when under pressure or dealing with uncertainty, he’s prone to over-apoligizing, may withdraw socially and become overly critical of his own work. Knowing him as long as I have, ChatGPT’s apt description of his personality made a lot of his behaviors and quirks a lot clearer to me.
Bottom line
With these 10 prompts, I’ll always have a quick and easy way to figure out someone’s character on a deeper level.
While I will always trust the knowledge of trusted personality psychologists whenever I need more insight into my personality, I will always be intrigued by an AI tool’s ability to take someone’s behaviors into account while it provides an extensive analysis of everything that makes up their persona.
