“Mortal Kombat” is one of gaming’s most iconic fighting franchises, born in the early 1990s and quickly exploding into global pop culture thanks to its digitised fighters, brutal “Fatalities,” and controversial violence. With over 100 million games sold worldwide, the series has become one of the most successful fighting game franchises ever. That long-standing legacy continues to fuel huge anticipation for every new release, including “Mortal Kombat 2,” which builds directly on that decades-deep history.
If you’re new to this franchise, the “Mortal Kombat” films follow warriors from Earthrealm who are chosen to compete in a deadly interdimensional tournament against Outworld fighters. If Earth loses enough times, it’s conquered. The story packs in plenty of martial arts, fantasy realms, magic powers, and iconic characters battling to protect Earth from invasion and destruction.
Already building major anticipation ahead of its theatrical release on May 8, “Mortal Kombat 2” set to bring the franchise back to the big screen with a larger-scale tournament and new fan-favorite characters.

A global press conference for “Mortal Kombat 2” brought together the film’s cast and creative team to tease the upcoming sequel and its expanded tournament stakes. In attendance were Karl Urban, Josh Lawson, Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, and Desmond Chiam, alongside director Simon McQuoid and series co-creator Ed Boon.
I had the chance to attend the “Mortal Kombat 2” press conference, where my question was asked about how the franchise has such a passionate fanbase and whether there were any fan expectations they felt pressure to live up to.
‘With a fanbase comes the expectation to deliver’
During the press conference, my question focused on the franchise’s hugely passionate global fanbase and whether the cast felt any pressure when it came to living up to fan expectations heading into the sequel. Josh Lawson, who plays Kano, talked about his experience.
“Yeah, of course there is,” Lawson said. “It’s a bit of a double-edged sword, right? You want to go into something with a built-in fan base — that’s fantastic because you know there’s already going to be an audience for it. But with that fan base comes the expectation to deliver on what they love and what matters to them.
I always felt that was at the forefront of everyone’s minds, not just Simon, but the producers, the writers, and Ed as well. It was always part of the conversation — every time we did a scene, it was like, ‘Is this what they want? Is this correct? Is this what they’re expecting?’ So I never felt like it rested on my shoulders alone to meet that expectation.”
Karl Urban, who has taken the role of Johnny Cage in “Mortal Kombat 2,” also shared his thoughts about stepping into this expansive world.
“I definitely felt the pressure,” Urban said. “I remember when I got cast, I told my two sons — who I actually played the game with, and that was my first introduction to the world of Mortal Kombat — ‘Hey guys, I’m going to be Johnny Cage.’ And they were like, ‘Oof. Big fan base. Don’t f*** it up.’ So right from the get-go, even from my own family, I felt it.
But when you’re in that situation, all you can do is channel that energy away from the fear and anxiety and focus it on the work, on preparation. For me, that meant a deep dive into martial arts. We were doing stuff that pro athletes do, those kinds of training exercises, and really immersing myself in the world of Mortal Kombat, from the games to what’s canon. Then it was about looking at the script and thinking, ‘Okay, how do I apply everything I’ve learned to this character?’
Jeremy did a wonderful job because he didn’t write Johnny Cage as someone driven purely by ego. He’s quite a dispirited character, which was a really smart choice because it gives both me and the audience somewhere to go — it gives him a real journey.”
