Nokia and Lockheed Martin Introduce Modular 5G Solution for Defense Applications

Nokia Federal Solutions and Lockheed Martin have introduced a modular 5G solution designed for U.S. and allied defense forces. The system enables military vehicles and platforms to use commercial 5G technology. It is built on an open architecture framework aligned with the Department of War (DoW) standards and its commercial-first approach.

The system integrates Nokia’s carrier-grade 5G with the Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance / Modular Open Suite of Standards (C5ISR/CMOSS). This allows components to be added or updated in a plug-and-play manner, reducing integration complexity and improving interoperability across different platforms.

The platform combines Nokia’s commercial 5G capabilities with Lockheed Martin’s 5G.MIL® solutions to create a hybrid network. This approach supports high-speed connectivity while maintaining the security and resilience required for mission-critical operations.

The system is designed to support evolving defense requirements, including use by NATO forces that are increasingly adopting 5G technologies. Its CMOSS-based design provides a standardized framework for integrating commercial technologies into military systems.

This launch builds on the companies’ collaboration announced in 2025, which focused on integrating Nokia’s 5G technology with Lockheed Martin’s Hybrid Base Station. The new solution moves beyond initial integration work toward a deployable system that can be used across vehicles and other defense platforms.

“Moving advanced communications from concept into the field requires discipline, scale, and an understanding of how defense systems are built and sustained,” said Sarah Hiza, senior vice president for Technology and Strategic Innovation at Lockheed Martin. “This collaboration is about rapidly delivering capability that can be deployed, sustained and trusted over the long term.”

CMOSS standards are developed by the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command. The new offering reflects ongoing efforts to bring standards-based 5G capabilities into operational use in defense environments.
