The public version of iOS 26.5 is finally here and with a few key updates for your iPhone. The latest version of iOS isn’t massive but it does make for some big specific changes.
Primarily, the update focuses on RCS messages in the Messages app, a new Pride wallpaper, CarPlay updates and Maps updates.
What’s new in iOS 26.5
The most notable change is the addition of end-to-end encryption for RCS messages between iPhone and Android phones. Apple has been testing the encrypted messages since iOS 26.4 beta 2 in February.
According to an Apple news release, this feature is still in a beta form but ready for the public, unlike the normal betas. “Users will know that a conversation is end-to-end encrypted when they see a new lock icon in their RCS chats. Encryption is on by default and will be automatically enabled over time for new and existing RCS conversations.”
Pride wallpapers
Just in time for Pride month in June, Apple is releasing its annual Pride wallpapers for iPhone, iPad and your Apple Watch. This year’s edition is highly customizable with different colors.
There are also nearly a dozen unique variants for you to try to find the flavor you prefer. The wallpapers are meant to be “joyful and dynamic” and celebrate LGBTQ+ communities.
Chatbots in CarPlay
Siri and Google Assistant have long been available in CarPlay, but IOS 26.5 introduces broader integration, including ChatGPT. You can’t use your voice to activate it without an iPhone shortcut, but it is available on the widget screen for vocal queries.
My colleague John Velasco tested ChatGPT in iOS 26.5 and found that the OpenAI chatbot’s voice was more fluid and realistic than Siri or Gemini.
Apple Maps
So far, the promised ads in Apple Maps haven’t launched quite yet, but Apple has promised that they would come this summer. That could be as soon as June.
However, Suggested Places has launched which displays recommendations for you based on what’s trending nearby and your recent search history.
Additional iOS 26.5 changes include automatic Bluetooth pairing for Magic accessories after being connected by USB-C and new customization options in the Reminders app.
Finally, iOS 26.5 now supports a 12-month commitment with monthly payment options for App Store subscriptions. This was announced at the end of April but goes live now.
Looking ahead, iOS 27 should get a big mention during WWDC 2026 which kicks off on Monday, June 8. If I were betting, I would expect a lot of talk surrounding a Gemini-revamp of Siri and more AI.
