US airlines tighten rules, ban humanoid robots from commercial flights


A growing number of airlines in the US are banning humanoid robots from commercial flights, citing safety, handling, and operational concerns.

United Airlines and Delta Air Lines are the latest carriers to prohibit passengers from carrying humanoid robots in either cabin baggage or checked luggage.

The restrictions distinguish human-like robots from conventional consumer electronics and smaller robotic devices, which can still be transported under existing battery and baggage rules.

The moves follow similar action by Southwest Airlines earlier this year after a widely publicized incident involving a humanoid robot being transported on a commercial flight, highlighting emerging challenges for airlines.

Humanoid flight ban

Airlines are banning humanoid robots from commercial flights as increasingly sophisticated machines raise new questions about how they should be screened, stored, and handled during air travel. United Airlines and Delta Air Lines are the latest carriers to prohibit passengers from transporting humanoid robots, expanding restrictions to both cabin and checked baggage.

United’s policy prohibits humanoid robots from being transported on its flights as carry-on baggage, checked luggage, or cargo. The airline’s guidance specifically identifies humanoid robots as prohibited items, placing them in a separate category from conventional consumer electronics and smaller robotic devices, reports Simple Flying.

Delta Air Lines has adopted a similar policy, although it currently describes its ban as temporary. The airline does not accept robots designed to resemble or imitate humans or animals in appearance, size, movement, or behavior as either carry-on or checked baggage. Delta’s restriction applies regardless of the robot’s size or intended purpose.

The policies do not appear to target robotics in general. Conventional devices such as robotic vacuum cleaners, toy robots, and other consumer electronics can still be transported when they meet existing baggage and lithium-battery requirements. Instead, the restrictions focus on humanoid and animal-like robots whose physical design and capabilities create transportation challenges that ordinary electronic devices do not.

Increasing safety concerns

Experts point out that the likely reason for the bans is the difficulty of applying existing aviation rules to increasingly advanced robots. Humanoid machines can have articulated arms and legs, unusual dimensions, heavy components, and large lithium-ion battery systems. Their shape and construction could make them harder to screen, secure, load, and store than conventional luggage.

Battery safety is another potential concern. Lithium-ion batteries are already subject to strict airline and aviation regulations because damaged, defective, or improperly handled batteries can create fire risks. A sophisticated humanoid robot may contain multiple batteries and complex electrical systems, making it more difficult for airline employees to determine how the machine should be transported and secured.

The robots may also raise questions during boarding and emergencies. Their weight, mobility, articulated limbs, and unconventional shapes could create complications when being placed in overhead compartments, cargo holds, or other designated storage areas. Airlines may also need clear procedures for preventing a robot from shifting during flight or interfering with evacuation and emergency-response procedures.

The issue came into sharper focus earlier this year after a humanoid robot traveled aboard a Southwest Airlines flight. The incident drew attention to the lack of clear procedures for handling human-like robots and sparked discussion about their classification, seating, battery storage, and other transportation requirements. Southwest subsequently moved to prohibit humanoid and animal-like robots from its flights, becoming an earlier example of an airline establishing dedicated restrictions for this emerging category of technology.

The decisions by Southwest, United, and Delta suggest airlines are responding primarily to uncertainty around safety, handling, and regulatory compliance rather than to a known pattern of in-flight failures involving humanoid robots. As these machines become larger, more capable, and more common, airlines may increasingly develop specific rules to remove ambiguity for passengers, airport staff, and flight crews.
