While Electronic Arts and Battlefield Studios saw incredible success in 2025 with the launch of Battlefield 6 in October — the game ended up performing so well across Xbox, PC, and PS5 that it became the best-selling title of the year — its monumental popularity dropped sharply heading into 2026, with many players disappointed in the slow development of new maps, features, and important fixes to critical issues.
Season 2 of its live-service updates failed to revive much interest, and though the devs acknowledged the community’s desire for more and larger maps, they said they couldn’t make them faster due to team size. Since then, that’s left Battlefield fans wondering what will ultimately come to the game this year — and now, thanks to an extensive new roadmap, we have our answer.

Season 3 is bringing Battlefield 3’s Grand Bazaar and Battlefield 4’s Golmud Railway back as Cairo Bazaar and Railway to Golmud, respectively, with adjustments made to improve core issues (more cover for Golmud to make infantry gameplay better, for example) and elevate their visuals to Battlefield 6 standards. Notably, Railway to Golmud is “nearly four times the size of Mirak Valley,” and will serve as a showcase of the true scale of Battlefield’s combined arms sandbox.
Then, in Season 4, the devs are adding a remake of the classic horseshoe-shaped Wake Island map and a colossal oceanic stage named Tsuru Reef, along with long-rumored naval warfare vehicles to traverse the waters. Both maps will feature functional aircraft carriers, a system for dynamic ocean waves, and combat between land, air, and sea assets.
Little is known about Season 5 beyond the fact it’s adding three new maps, one of which has been teased with an image of what appears to be a reflection of neon city lights in a puddle of water; many believe this will be the urban Battlefield 4 map Dawnbreaker set in Hong Kong in China.
In addition to new maps to play on, Season 3 is also introducing Battle Royale solo matchmaking and Battle Royale ranked play to the free-to-play Battlefield REDSEC, with Season 4 set to implement “Custom Lobbies” (whatever that means; you can already set up custom matches in Portal) and a Spectator Mode. Both are also bringing new weapons, vehicles, and modes to the sandbox.
On top of that, Battlefield Studios is adding several highly requested features to Battlefield 6 throughout 2026, including an actual server browser with persistent (presumably official) servers (this has been a hot button issue since before launch), the option for proximity chat, clan-like Platoons for larger communities of players, and official multiplayer leaderboards.
All of this is awesome, and it’s wonderful to finally see that long-requested additions and features like naval warfare, a true server browser, and proximity chat are coming to the FPS in the coming months. Still, though, I can’t help but feel disappointed that we’re only getting two maps per season — three for Season 5 was marketed as “a holiday surprise” — when we used to get four in a three-month period in Battlefield 4.
For many, two maps every season just isn’t enough, and I worry there’s not enough content in this roadmap to satisfy players. With that said, however, I am glad that the content we are getting looks terrific, and that Battlefield Studios is finally delivering much of what the community’s been asking for.
