STMicroelectronics has developed the ST64UWB, a new family of ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless chips designed for automotive, consumer, and industrial applications. Positioned as an industry-first solution supporting the upcoming IEEE 802.15.4ab standard, along with IEEE 802.15.4z (FiRa), the ST64UWB combines precise long-range distance measurement with high-resolution radar capabilities in a single chip. This enables advanced use cases such as seamless hands-free access, secure digital key systems, and enhanced safety features like in-car child presence detection, while maintaining reliable performance even when devices are obstructed in bags or pockets.
The ST64UWB integrates precise ranging and radar functionality on a single chip, reducing system complexity and cost while improving overall performance. It features a high link budget for robust ranging and is designed to be resilient to signal attenuation caused by the human body. The chip supports both IEEE 802.15.4z and the upcoming IEEE 802.15.4ab standard with narrowband-assisted mechanisms, enabling improved accuracy and extended range.
A built-in SESIP Level 3 secure enclave provides hardware-grade protection for digital keys and credentials, eliminating the need for external secure elements. The device also integrates an Arm Cortex-M85 MCU, allowing the full application stack to run on-chip and reducing design complexity. It supports key ecosystem standards such as CCC, ICCE, and Aliro for interoperability across automotive and access control applications.
By combining multiple functionalities into a single device, the ST64UWB significantly reduces bill of materials, wiring requirements, and installation effort. This high level of integration enables lower system cost while delivering advanced features such as hands-free access and radar-based sensing. With its compact, single-chip architecture and support for next-generation UWB standards, the ST64UWB is well suited for applications ranging from automotive digital keys and smart access systems to industrial automation and secure building entry solutions.
