China uses fast-growing bamboo barriers to fight desertification


Researchers from the Chinese Academy of Forestry are introducing bamboo-based barriers and trays to stabilize shifting sands. It could offer an eco-friendly alternative to existing sand-fixing methods.

This strategy replaces short-lived straw grids and non-biodegradable plastics with woven bamboo barriers and rainwater-collecting trays. 

The South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that these renewable bamboo systems are expected to extend barrier lifespans from a few years up to a decade and reduce overall costs by over 20 percent.

China’s war on moving sand

Desertification is the severe degradation of fertile drylands into unproductive, desert-like terrain, stripping the soil of its vegetation, nutrients, and agricultural capability. 

Driven by practices like overgrazing and deforestation alongside climate pressures, this land loss poses a massive ecological and human threat. As evidenced in China, where desertification now affects 27.4% of the nation’s land area and directly impacts around 400 million people.

Earlier measures to combat desertification across its arid northern regions included sand-fixing methods like straw, plastic barriers, and pollen-heavy shrubs. 

For instance, take China’s Taklimakan Desert, which is the world’s second-largest mobile desert. 

The Taklimakan Desert Highway plays a vital strategic role in regional oil exploration and Xinjiang’s socio-economic development, but it faces constant disruption from shifting wind-blown sand.

Early mechanical sand control systems like fences and straw checkerboards were deployed to protect the route. However, this praised method faces severe longevity issues. Particularly, extreme desert conditions cause the straw to degrade into dust within just two to three years. In fact, over 70 percent of these barriers have degraded and lost functionality, frequently leaving the highway buried and blocked since 1999.

On the other hand, synthetic plastic grid alternatives solve the decay issue but leave behind non-biodegradable waste. And planted shrubs like Artemisia create severe seasonal allergy outbreaks in nearby populations, driving the need for a more durable and eco-friendly solution.

That’s why researchers are now betting on bamboo as a new contender to secure the dry northern frontier. It is one of the fastest-growing plants on Earth. And could be a simple solution to an extraordinarily complex problem.

Cost-effective solution

China’s massive Three-North Shelterbelt Program spans thousands of kilometers across the country’s arid northwest, north, and northeast. Under Beijing’s latest five-year conservation blueprint, the demand for sand-fixing technology that is both long-lasting and ecologically benign has reached a fever pitch.

Bamboo’s durability allows woven sand barriers to last between 3 and 10 years, which is up to three times longer than straw grids. In addition to cutting costs, this extended lifespan provides a completely renewable, UV-resistant, and biodegradable alternative that eliminates the risk of synthetic microplastic pollution.

Transforming giant woody grass into desert armor requires smart engineering. As per SCMP, Yu’s team has developed techniques to process and weave raw bamboo into structural, sand-fixing squares and tall windbreak barriers. Specialized rainwater-collection trays have also been designed using a blend of bamboo and wood fibers to help sparse rainfall reach deeper soil layers.

Field trials in Qinghai province and the Inner Mongolia autonomous region have already proven successful, demonstrating that bamboo barriers can endure brutal desert climates without brittle snapping or rotting early.

Researchers are even looking beyond barriers, experimenting with cultivating edible fungi in sandy ground to build up organic soil nutrients under bamboo shelter zones.
